Reminiscent of the popular TV sitcom of the 70's "Chico and The Man" many
will enjoy this modern day bakery version of Tracy Letts "Superior Donuts" which
visits The Ivy Tech Stage this fall on October 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
What will prove to be a wise assortment of plays for this years 2013/2014
theater season, the groups director Prof. Craig Parmley has a created a lineup
of sweet stories and subplots for the entire year, not just one serving, but a
full course of great theater for bonding a community. "Superior Donuts" sets the
table nicely.
This seasons appetizer focuses on the racial bonding and generational
bridging between Arthur Przybyszewski, a 60s radical donut shop owner in a
rundown neighborhood of Chicago, and Franco, an energetic troubled young African
American employee who wants to change the establishment. Their dialogue and
Arthur's reflective flashbacks on his past in and about the city coupled with a
remaining cast of true Chicago characters such as a Russian appliance dealer,
crazy alcoholic lady, street thug, loan shark, a couple of cops (one who even
takes a liking to Arthur), a surprise visitor, and you have a surprising sweet
tale of relationships rising and developing in an inner city oven.
Mr. Letts has carefully crafted a play that proves that the artistic dynamics
of dialogue are essential in keeping communities in concert with each other even
if the instruments miss a note or two. Something Starbucks has been trying to do
for years, something The Ivy Tech Stage serves this fall.
